Support of the work with refugees by AI

The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, provides a strategic framework for using artificial intelligence in humanitarian contexts. Rooted in human rights and humanitarian principles, it aims to improve outcomes for forcibly displaced and stateless people through responsible, inclusive, and transparent AI deployment.

How does UNHRC uses AI?

  • For humanitarian decision-making (e.g. model climate-related risks and forecast displacement)
  • For protection and service delivery (e.g. detect digital risks like misinformation and online gender-based violence and support multilingual service)
  • For oversight and integrity (e.g. data-driven planning and policy development)
  • For internal efficiency (e.g. automated back-office tasks)

Harnessing AI to more effectively and efficiently enhance protection and solutions for forcibly displaced and stateless people and to deliver improved, data-driven responses across humanitarian contexts – people-centred and guided by principles of safety and accountability.
