About the network

The VWN (Dutch Association for Science Journalism and Communication) is a prominent, independent professional association dedicated to the advancement of high-quality science journalism and communication in the Netherlands.

Originally emerging from the Science Journalism Section of the NVJ (Dutch Association of Journalists), the organization established itself as an independent entity in 1985. In 2013, recognizing the evolving media landscape and the fact that many of its freelance members were engaged in both independent reporting and institutional science communication, the association officially broadened its name and objectives to encompass both fields—while always maintaining a special, critical focus on safeguarding independent science journalism.

Run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers, the network boasts a membership of approximately 350 to 400 professionals. Its members range from staff reporters and freelance investigative science journalists to science communicators, press officers, and public information specialists. The VWN provides a vital community for these professionals, serving as a hub for knowledge exchange, networking, and the critical examination of how science is conveyed to the public.

The organization is deeply committed to ensuring that science is communicated accurately, ethically, and independently. To foster this community, the VWN regularly organizes a wide array of professional development and networking events, including expert debates, hands-on workshops, exclusive behind-the-scenes museum and laboratory tours, and informal meet-ups. Furthermore, the association actively advocates for its members’ interests, addressing industry challenges such as freelance fair pay, the implications of AI in journalism, and open-access policies for scientific research.

Network Projects & Funds

• The VWN Publication Prize (De Gouden Beitel): An annual, prestigious award presented at the general members’ meeting to honor an outstanding, inspiring piece of science journalism that successfully bridges the gap between complex science and the general public.
• The VWN Tripfonds: Named after former minister Boy Trip, this specialized fund provides financial grants to help members attend important international scientific symposia and events, fostering global connections.
• The Sanne Deurloo Fund: Named after a former VWN chair, this scholarship program specifically supports young and emerging science journalists and communicators by helping to fund their educational courses and specialized training.
