Recovery Window Media Network

Recovery Window is a Ukrainian media network that connects independent media, civil society organizations and experts working on transparent, accountable and people-centred recovery.

About the network

Recovery Window is a Ukrainian media network that connects independent media, civil society organizations and experts working on transparent, accountable and people-centred recovery. The network is open to new members, but membership is based on shared values, editorial independence, reliability and relevance to recovery-related work. The potential members are assessed to ensure trust, quality collaboration and the safety of the network.

The network is based in Ukraine, was founded in March 2024 to support independent media in the war-torn, has a legal entity and 100+ members, media outlets and non-governmental organisations as well as other organisations – thinktanks, experts, civic initiatives – who are working on Ukraine’s recovery, reconstruction, accountability and community resilience.

The network covers broad range of activities, including larger impact and outreach. participating in collaborative projects, finding partners and contacts in the network for individual projects, joint grant applications, knowledge exchange, training and mentoring, and organising workshops and conferences. Beside these, the network provides visibility for local and regional voices in Ukraine’s recovery process; access to verified partners, experts and communication support; collaboration on recovery-related stories, campaigns and public-interest initiatives.

Journalists of the member news outlets cover stories related to recovery and reconstruction, local governance, accountability, community resilience, IDPs, veterans, war-affected communities, access to services (e.g. energy and education) and public participation in recovery processes. Partners have experience in investigative and solution journalism as well as in data journalism, crossborder and collaborative journalism, fact-checking, analytical and explanatory journalism as well as network coordination, partner matching and recovery-focused communication campaigns. The network also provides support for local media covering recovery processes.

The members started working together because they felt recovery is not only about rebuilding infrastructure. It is also about access to reliable information, accountability and people’s ability to understand decisions that affect their lives. The mission of the network is to help people who face recovery-related challenges to influence the recovery process by using media tools, partnerships and the shared resources of the network. Connecting media, NGOs, experts and partners aims to be more responsive to the needs of communities and strenghten community resilience. One important area of work is monitoring reconstruction processes, including the recovery of damaged housing. This work has helped bring attention to concrete problems faced by people affected by the war and has built trust with communities that need support and visibility.

The network also runs Zdybanky (meaning “get-togethers” or “meetups” in Ukrainian). peer-learning and networking meetings for partner media and civil society organizations. These meetings help partners exchange experience, find contacts, discuss practical challenges and strengthen cooperation around recovery-related topics. It also supports regional media through consultations, mentoring, training, editorial support and content production focused on innovative formats, sustainability, audience engagement and better coverage of recovery processes.

In addition, the network helps partners amplify their stories through joint publications, distribution, social media campaigns and cooperation with national and international stakeholders.
