About the network
Re:cover Ukraine is a voluntary peer-to-peer network connecting Ukrainian and other European journalists through practical support, cross-border cooperation, and direct responses to journalists’ needs as they arise. They work on a voluntary, on-request basis, responding to specific needs when sharing experience, networks, insights and perspectives can be useful. The work is rooted in dialogue, reciprocity, and equality in collaboration. They do not approach cooperation as one-way support, but as collaboration between peers who bring different contexts, forms of knowledge, and professional experiences. This approach allows the members to contribute in ways that are flexible, trust-based, and shaped by the realities of the peers working within.
At the core of the work stands this simple principle: journalist to journalist, colleague to colleague. The work is not only voluntary and practical, but based on solidarity which is not driven by abstract ideas of support. The initiative works on request, in close dialogue with journalists themselves, and try to respond to concrete needs as they arise. This also means listening before acting and building cooperation on trust, professional respect and mutual learning.
The network was founded in 2023, it is a registered NGO in Denmark and has 50-100 members, both freelancers and staff journalists, The members are based in many European countries outside of Ukraine and Denmark: United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Czechia, Slovakia, Kosovo, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Georgia, Belgium and Bosnia-Herzegovina. They cover the following topics:
- Climate and environment
- Corruption and organised crime
- Democracy and politics
- Disinformation
- Health and social issues
- Human rights and migration
- Science
The network provides training, editorial and mentoring support, organising events, and facilitate cross-border and collaborative journalism projects. The members have different skills and expertise, including investigative reporting, data journalism, fact-checking, solution journalism and media literacy. Anyone can join who would like to achieve larger impact and outreach, participating in collaborative projects, finding partners and contacts in the network for individual projects or for joint grant applications, interested on knowledge exchange, mentoring, training and workshops.
The organisation supports fact-finding missions with regional and local media across Ukraine – these missions provide direct insight into how newsrooms operate under wartime conditions and help to identify concrete needs, challenges, and possible follow-up initiatives. In addition, the network has launched and awarded the first two Re:cover research grants to Ukrainian journalists as a way of turning solidarity into direct support, and the grant programme is continuing.
Across seminars, fact-finding missions, grants and everyday networking, the aim is the same: to strengthen journalism’s ability to serve the public under wartime conditions. This includes standing with colleagues who face exhaustion, insecurity and attempts of intimidation or silencing. Supporting journalists is therefore not only a matter of professional exchange, but also of defending the space in which independent journalism, public debate and democratic accountability can surviv e.
