About the network
Inclusive Journalism Cymru is a dedicated network designed to connect, support, and campaign for those who have been marginalized or excluded by the mainstream journalism industry in Wales. Founded in 2021, the organization was established to address the deep-rooted inequalities within the media landscape. By uniting journalists from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds across the United Kingdom (specifically focusing on Wales), the network aims to reclaim journalism as a public good that truly represents and serves all members of society.
The network boasts a community of over 100 members, welcoming both freelance reporters and staff journalists. It operates with an open-door policy for new members who share its vision of equity and inclusion. By pooling their collective power, members are able to collaborate on editorial projects, mount joint grant applications, and exchange vital practical know-how through specialized training and events.
Projects
Inclusive Journalism Cymru actively creates platforms to elevate marginalized voices and build sustainable media models. The network published a guide for media organizations for inclusive recruiting. Furthermore, in 2023 the organization launched the Inclusive Media Development Lab, an incubator program that equips members with the tools, resources, and knowledge required to build their own sustainable, inclusive media products and independent organizations. Most recently Cymru launched the Cynefin Fellowship with the Reuters Institute.
