Eurolife/SudVest

A group of 15 small media organisations at local and national level from the West Oltenia region and 7 large media organisations from Bucharest, Romania

About the network

SudVest is a Romanian media network developed by the Eurolife NGO that connects 15 small, local and regional media organizations from the West Oltenia region with 7 large, prominent media organizations based in Bucharest. The network is open to new members, welcoming both independent freelancers and established media outlets who are committed to strengthening regional reporting and advancing their digital competencies. Potential members are encouraged to join to foster quality collaboration, share resources, and elevate the local media landscape in Romania.

The network is based in Romania and was founded in 2009 as a legal entity to support local mass media journalists. It brings together a diverse group of members—ranging from individual reporters to larger newsrooms—who work to bridge the gap between regional journalism and capital-based media. Its core mission is to ensure that local reporters have the resources, backing, and digital skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving modern media environment.

The network covers a broad range of activities aimed at capacity building, including organizing collaborative editorial projects, facilitating joint grant applications, and providing extensive knowledge exchange. Through targeted seminars and exchange visits, Eurolife creates a space for partners to find contacts for individual projects and share practical know-how. Additionally, the network provides vital editorial support and project management assistance to help smaller outlets tackle ambitious reporting.

Journalists within the member news outlets cover crucial stories related to corruption and organized crime, health and social issues, and general public-interest news. Partners in the network have robust experience in investigative journalism, bringing high-level editorial standards to regional reporting. By connecting large Bucharest-based organizations with smaller regional outlets, SudVest ensures that local journalists receive the mentorship and backing needed to execute complex, in-depth investigations that impact their local communities.

The members started working together because they recognized a pressing need to support local journalists in acquiring critical digital skills to stay secure and competitive. The mission of the network is to empower these regional voices by utilizing collaborative partnerships and shared resources. Connecting local and national media aims to make journalism in the West Oltenia region more resilient, secure, and responsive to the needs of the public.

A key component of the network’s work is its hands-on training initiatives and professional meetups. For example, Eurolife actively organizes specialized workshops, such as the comprehensive digital security training for journalists (TTX&VR) held recently in Craiova, which brought together members from 15 regional media organizations. These events help partners exchange experiences, address practical digital vulnerabilities, and strengthen their investigative reporting capabilities in a safe environment.

In addition, the network helps partners amplify their stories by fostering direct collaboration on editorial projects with larger national outlets, ensuring that important local issues from West Oltenia reach a much broader audience across Romania.
