Covering Climate Now (CCNow)

It is a global network of journalists for journalists. The aim is to improve the climate coverage worldwide.

About the network

It is a global network of journalists for journalists. The aim is to improve the climate coverage worldwide. The network has more than 500 news and media partners from all over the world. Slightly more than half of the partners are based in the US, the other half representing more than 60 countries.

Since its foundation in April, 2019, over 500 journalism outlets from around the world have joined CCNow, including some of the biggest names in journalism — the Guardian, TIME, The Times of India, Al Jazeera English, Reuters, Bloomberg, Agence France-Presse, NBC, ABC, CBS News, and more — along with scores of local and special interest publications. CCNow collaborates with journalism support organizations such as Climate Central, the North-American Society of Environmental Journalists, and Solutions Journalism Network to advance the quality, impact, and reach of climate journalism.

The main activities are the following:

  • Community. Collaborate with hundreds of newsroom partners to share best practices, develop reporting projects, and gain insights from diverse perspectives
  • Support. Build climate reporting confidence by participating in webinars and newsroom training programs throughout the year.
  • Leadership. Show industry leadership by highlighting the newsroom’s commitment to climate reporting excellence.
  • Visibility. Gain recognition for your climate coverage and strengthen the impact of reporting.

Key CCNow projects and initiatives include:

  • The 89 Percent Project: A year-long collaborative media surge highlighting the fact that an overwhelming majority (80–89%) of the world’s population wants stronger government climate action. The project focuses on joint coverage weeks to break the “climate silence” in mainstream media and give a voice to this global majority.
  • The Climate Newsroom: A free, customized training program for local media. This project guides reporters, editors, and digital journalists on how to effectively localize, humanize, and “solutionize” climate change stories so they deeply resonate with their communities. Beside the Climate Newsroom, CCNow offers plenty of other, mainly online training (here and here).
  • CCNow Journalism Awards: An annual awards program recognizing the best climate reporting across print, audio, video, and digital platforms. It highlights journalism that successfully connects the public with climate emergencies and solutions.
  • Covering COP30: Collaborative coverage networks dedicated to the UN climate summit in Belém in 2025, providing real-time news feeds, multimedia content, and localized perspectives that newsrooms worldwide can share and republish.
  • Impact report and collaborative Coverage Weeks: Frequent, synchronized editorial campaigns where diverse media partners across the globe—from local newspapers to major broadcasters like The Guardian and Reuters—simultaneously publish in-depth stories on a specific climate-related theme.
