CORRECTIV.Europe brings together local journalists across Europe to do cross-border investigations

About the network

CORRECTIV.Europe is an international newsroom that brings together local journalists across Europe—including both freelance and staff reporters—to carry out transnational, data-driven investigations. Rather than focusing solely on major global scoops, the network aims to achieve a lasting impact at the local level by empowering regional and community-based media.

By providing infrastructure, data support, tools, and training free of charge and without a complex application process, CORRECTIV.Europe removes barriers for local newsrooms, saving them time and resources while maximizing the quality and impact of their reporting. The initiative views its network as a long-term community of peers that extends well beyond individual collaborative projects. Built on the successful foundation of its domestic counterpart (CORRECTIV.Lokal), the network draws on specialized skills and strategies:

  • Investigative Methods: Conducting rigorous cross-border research, document analysis, and leveraging pan-European datasets.
  • Advanced Specialisms: Utilizing data science, visualization, and local-impact mapping to translate macro-issues into relevant community stories.
  • Collaborative Infrastructure: Offering editorial coordination, localized data packages, training, and peer-to-peer networking support.

The network focuses on European topics that carry direct relevance for local audiences across several core public-interest subjects:

  • Climate & Environment: Investigating ecological threats, industrial pollution, and local climate impacts.
  • Corruption & Organized Crime: Exposing financial malfeasance and corporate accountability issues.
  • Democracy & Politics: Strengthening local democracy and institutional transparency.
  • Health & Social Issues: Examining public health challenges and societal inequalities.
  • Human Rights & Migration: Tracking systemic issues affecting communities at the regional level.

Network Projects

  • Industrial Air Pollution Investigation: An extensive cross-border investigation conducted with partners across Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Poland that quantified the societal and economic costs of industrial pollution, allowing local journalists to report on specific facilities and impacts in their own backyards.
