About the network

CORRECTIV.Europe is an international newsroom within the German non-profit investigative newsroom CORRECTIV that builds and coordinates a European network of local journalists (freelance and staff reporters). Their definition for “European” is broad and extends to the Council of Europe member states.

With CORRECTIV.Europe, the newsroom offers a particularly easy way to join collaborative investigations that removes the risk for local newsrooms, saves them time and resources and maximises the quality and impact of their reporting. CORRECTIV.Europe is passionate about achieving a lasting impact on the local level rather than scoring the next big scoop.

This idea combines three elements: data and investigation support, training, and the network, which they envision as a long-term community of peers that lasts beyond each individual collaborative investigation.

Becoming a member and taking part in cross-border investigations, as well as profiting from the training offer is free of charge for the journalists or their newsrooms, and no application is needed.

CORRECTIV strongly believes that local journalism is a foundational pillar of democratic life that must be preserved and strengthened. In Germany, they have successfully built a network called CORRECTIV.Lokal since 2017 that brings together over 1,600 local journalists (staff reporters and freelancers) to collaborate on large-scale stories. They want to expand this effort to other countries.

Projects

In October 2023, they published their first investigation on industrial air pollution with partners from Germany, Italy, Hungary and Poland. Together, the journalists exposed the costs for society attached to industrial air pollution: €265bn for just one year in Europe.

The exclusive dataset allowed them to put a number on the toll that industrial air pollution means for citizens in their own backyard, and name the facilities that contribute the most to this burden. Local journalists in the network could report on the topic with data on their own area, and therefore hold companies and politicians accountable.

They plan to go on working on this topic in the coming months.
