Balkan Network of Science Journalists

A network of science journalists from across South East Europe, interested in improving the quality of critical and ethical science coverage.

About the network

The Balkan Network of Science Journalists is a group of science journalists, writers and communicators from across South East Europe, interested in improving the quality of critical and ethical science coverage in the media.

Its origins go back to the PCST2012 conference in Florence, Italy, where UNESCO convened the “Panel Discussion: Science Communication in the South East European Region – Overview of the Current Situation and Quality and Accountability of Science Communication”, that brought some of them together for the first time.

An e-mail group and links made there carried on, and other science journalists joined along the way, at numerous meetings. Two schools of science journalism were held in Belgrade, Serbia in 2013 and Podgorica, Montenegro in 2014, where the network grew and improved.

The network was formally founded at International School of Science Journalism, in Erice, Italy, in June 2016 and at the 3rd European Conference of Science Journalists, in Manchester, UK, in July 2016.

The Annual General Meetings, including any board elections, were held at the 4th European Conference of Science Journalists in Copenhagen, Denmark, on June 26-30; at the 5th European Conference of Science Journalists, ECSJ2018, in Toulouse, France, on 8 July 2018; at the 11th World Conference of Science Journalists, in Lausanne, Switzerland, 1-5 July 2019; at the 2019-2020 Balkan Science Journalism Workshops held in Belgrade on 5 April 2019, and in Lausanne on 1 July 2019; and at the European Conference of Science Journalists in Leiden on 12 July, 2022.
