About the network
Working Together Across Borders – Arena for Journalism in Europe supports collaborative journalism when reporters are working together across geographical and professional borders with scholars, scientists, and with civil society. The founders of Arena believe that collaborative journalism is crucial to knowledge sharing, critical thinking and political life in European societies. They build European networks, create cross-border meeting spaces, and spread the tools and experiences of collaborative projects. Arena for Journalism in Europe is a foundation established in the Netherlands on January 22nd 2019.
The core activities of Arena are:
- Dataharvest and other conferences
- The Academy
- The networks (see the networks of the main page of the Directory)
Arena is operating as a “matchmaker” and facilitator, it connects journalists, data experts, academics, and scientists to work together on critical, multi-national projects. The organisation educates journalists and provides the necessary infrastructure to execute complex investigations:
- The Collaborative Desk: A secure digital workspace for remote teams, complete with Nextcloud environments, secure chat, and project management tools.
- Fellowships & Training: Co-hosting programs like the European Collaborative Journalism Programme (ECJP), which provides working grants and mentorship to early- and mid-career reporters.
- Publications & Advising: Publishing the Arena Papers to share practical knowledge, advising media partners and journalism schools on how to incorporate collaborative methods, and publishing high-impact data investigations (such as the award-winning Green to Grey project)
Arena organizes and hosts two annual conferences for investigative journalists designed to share tools, datasets, and methods, and to spawn cross-border collaborative projects. Dataharvest is the European Investigative Journalism Conference, held annually in May in Mechelen (Belgium), it attracts hundreds of international attendees from dozens of countries, focusing on data journalism, FOI specialists, and collaboration. The other big event is the Climate Arena Conference, an event held every October in different locations, uniting journalists and scientists from across Europe to investigate the climate crisis and other environmental issues.
Arena has been hosting monthly online meetings for editorial coordinators of cross-border investigations since 2024. This is for coordinators of cross-border investigative teams. The members meet every month to share tips and experiences and build knowledge about this developing journalistic role.
