When AI is used to control traffic

The city brain monitor is a centralized artificial intelligence (AI) and big data platform used to observe, analyze, and manage urban infrastructure in real time. Developed by Chinese tech company Alibaba Group, the City Brain systems have been adopted by local governments throughout the country as well as in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Currently, these systems are mostly used for traffic management, but they have been used and expanded to cover other needs as well. City Brain systems have been promoted as making cities “smarter” and improving their residents’ quality of life. However, the systems have also faced criticism for issues relating to privacy, cost, and their use of surveillance.

Key Functions

  • Traffic Control: Adjusts traffic lights, tracks violations, and clears paths for emergency vehicles using live video and GPS data.
  • Infrastructure Safety: Monitors underground conditions to predict road collapses and construction risks.
  • Public Services: Integrates data to streamline city planning, emergency response, and digital government portals.

How It Works

  • Data Collection: Gathers feeds from cameras, sensors, public transit, and weather stations.
  • Processing: Uses cloud platforms like Alibaba Cloud to process millions of data points within milliseconds.
  • Action: Automates responses or alerts human operators to resolve disruptions.
