About the network

ICIJ is a Washington DC-based global network of more than 290 investigative journalists and 140 media partners in more than 100 countries who collaborate on in-depth investigative stories.  Originally launched in 1997 by the Center for Public Integrity, the ICIJ spun off to become a fully independent non-profit organization in 2017. The full list of members is available

The network is globally renowned for coordinating massive, cross-border data journalism projects, exposing international corruption, tax evasion, and abuses of power. Breaking from the traditional “lone wolf” journalistic model, ICIJ facilitates secure global collaborations. Journalists from competing outlets share data, technology, and resources to uncover stories that no single newsroom could handle alone. The network committee represents the ICIJ members, setting principles and best practices, priorities and activities. ICIJ is heavily reliant on processing and analyzing massive caches of leaked documents (often millions of files), using secure communication platforms and custom-built data analysis tools.

Major Investigations

The ICIJ is most famous for leading unprecedented, world-altering investigations into offshore finance and global secrecy. Some of their most notable projects include:

  • The Panama Papers (2016): Exposed the hidden offshore wealth and tax evasion strategies of world leaders, politicians, and celebrities. This investigation earned the ICIJ a Pulitzer Prize.
  • The Paradise Papers (2017): A massive leak revealing offshore investments of multinational corporations and high-net-worth individuals.
  • The Pandora Papers (2021): One of the largest cross-border journalistic collaborations in history, exposing the secret offshore holdings of more than 350 current and former world leaders, politicians, and public officials.
  • Ongoing Watchdog Reporting: The ICIJ consistently releases in-depth, targeted projects. Recent prominent investigations include China Targets, which delved into international money laundering networks.

The ICIJ’s work consistently triggers durable, tangible real-world consequences. Their investigations have directly led to the resignation of world leaders, global legislative reforms, the recovery of billions in stolen tax revenues, and sweeping law enforcement investigations worldwide.
