About the network
GFMD is a global international netwok of media development and journalism support organisations with more than 220 members. See the list of members here in a searchable database.
They act together to support journalism and media through collaboration, knowledge exchange and advocacy. Through collaboration, coordination, and collective actions, the network creates, promotes, and delivers policies and programmes to sustain journalism as a public good. It coordinates global efforts to sustain independent journalism, fight disinformation, and advocate for freedom of expression and pluralistic media ecosystems worldwide.
Key pillars of its work include:
- Global Advocacy & Policy: GFMD successfully lobbied the UN to include “Public Access to Information” in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It continually advocates for platform accountability and media rights in digital legislation.
- Knowledge & Network Sharing: Operating as a platform, it connects over 200 member organizations across 80+ countries, allowing journalism practitioners to exchange best practices, tackle the digital divide, and share industry resources.
- Establishing Sector Standards: GFMD collaborates with bodies like the OECD to establish and promote universal principles for effective media development and assistance.
- Research & Advisory: It provides trusted overviews and data from the field to influence policy, assist international aid departments, and mitigate challenges like censorship and online gender-based violence.
