European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) isa central hub bringing together fact-checkers and researchers to fight AI-driven disinformation. This is the EU’s largest interdisciplinary network to counter disinformation, not only AI-generated, but any kind. It works to strengthen and enable collaboration among a multidisciplinary community of stakeholders tackling online disinformation. It brings together fact-checkers, media literacy experts, and academic researchers to understand and analyse disinformation, in collaboration with media organisations, online platforms and media literacy practitioners. The main areas of activities are:
- Fact-checking
- Media literacy
- Research
- Policy analysis
EDMO can count on a network of 15 national or multinational Hubs active across 28 countries in the EU and EEA – all 27 EU member states as well as Moldova, Norway and Ukraine. EDMO Hubs bring a unique potential to understand and act upon specific digital media vulnerabilities in the areas they cover.
EDMO also has working groups, one of these is the Internal Expert Group on GenAI and Disinformation where members and experts are fostering idea exploration, collaboration and development of initiatives that address the challenges brought about by Generative AI in its role in exacerbating disinformation as well as ways AI technology can be leveraged to tackle disinformation.
