What BBC is doing with AI?

As the BBC explores AI, they’re committing to using the technology to support their public mission. The BBC AI principles guide their approach to use AI to make sure they act in the best interest of the public, they prioritise talent and creativity, and they’re transparent with audiences about where AI has been used.

To support their commitment to transparency, this page provides more general information about key areas where the BBC is using AI in their content and services. A few examples are the following: audio weather reports, natural history programs, making images and videos clearer and anonymising programme contributors. In iPlayer, Sounds, News, and Sport, BBC uses machine learning (a type of AI) to recommend programmes they think audience’ll like, alongside content that is important to know about. See more here what does ’recommended for you’ mean.

The BBC ’What we are doing with AI’ page is updated regularly as their use of AI evolves. If anyone is looking for inspiration and idea for policy making, the BBC guidelines and principles can serve as relevant resources.  The charter introduces generative AI pilots, explains use of AI in news, current affairs and factual, and listing AI tools and softwares used at the BBC.
